Plot Summary
On her 16th birthday, Himari Momochi receives a letter stating she has inherited a mansion called the "Momochi House." Having been raised in an orphanage, this mansion is the only thing left of her real family, so Himari pays no mind to the rumors that it may be haunted. Upon entering it, she meets Aoi Nanamori and his companions, Ise and Yukari, who all seem to be squatting in her new home. Although they warn her to leave the house, Himari vows to be the one to make them leave instead. But soon, she is attacked by youkai and finds out that the house sits in the space between the world of the living and the spirit realm. Even more surprising, Aoi was chosen to be the guardian of the house—a position originally meant for Himari. But this great power came with an awful price: Aoi can never leave the mansion, and his existence in the human world has been erased. Ignoring his pleas for her to leave the mansion, Himari promises to help Aoi break the housebound curse as she begins living under the same roof as him.

Something seems suspicious when somebody inherits something from somebody that person barely knew. Himari inherited a haunted house from her parents who died quite a long time ago, and she finds out that it's at the border between the human world and the demon world, and that some ayakashis have been squatting there. But despite the calls for her to leave, especially after being attacked by some malevolent ayakashi after her Momochi blood, she decides to stay realizing that this just might be the only way she can get to know her real parents. And thus, Himari begins her new life there with Aoi, who ended up becoming the new head of the household that was supposed to belong to Himari. An interesting start here as that house is full of mysteries and stuff, all while there's the relationship Himari and Aoi build together seeing that they will be living together for the time being. I'm curious to know exactly what led to Aoi becoming the head of the household, as well as the history of the house knowing that it's a place where supernatural stuff happens.

It's very unoriginal, but it seems pretty good so far. I'll probably stick with it.

Now that the dust has settled after the initial shocking turn of events that covered pretty much the entire first episode, this one gets down to business in setting things up. Himari has the power to banish anybody she wants from the house, while Aoi is trapped inside the house having stumbled into this place seven years ago, all while he never existed according to the human world. When he's transformed into Nue form, he's in full control of himself. So Himari goes out, bumps into her homeroom teacher-to-be at her new school, and gets a ton of stuff knowing that she and Aoi will be living together for quite some time while she figures out a way to get him out. After a first episode that really missed its mark, this one clarifies a number of things going on.

Did she seriously tell the teacher she found a magic boy in the mountains on the border between the real world and the spirit world?
Also, were the lesser yokai bringing toilet paper?
What's the probability the teacher is his older brother though?

@HOOfan_1 Definitely the older brother. She'll probably make friends with his ex-g/f in class too.

Himari begins school with summer break just around the corner, and brings her new friends over to the house, that's quite a long ways away. And seeing that they would freak out at the sight of ayakashis that she orders Aoi and company to hide, but instead they crossdress and pretend to be her elder sisters. But it turns out one of her friends is actually a ghost, which happens to be Torii as she passed away and remained a ghost to make a friend, and Iizuka was being possessed by Kasha as he's obsessed with showing his superiority over Nue. That Kasha guy is quite dangerous, and it looks like things are about to get serious.

I guess at least they have an indoor bathroom even if it probably doesn't have indoor plumbing.
It also occurs to me that the lesser spirits have definitely not been bringing our prince toothpaste all these years. He must have the mouth of a meth head.

Now that Kasha has appeared, this episode is focused on Ise as while he's also a fire user, his flames are the regular blazing kind as opposed to Kasha's that's a dark flame. He was curse and went through a lot of turmoil in life being from the Shojo clan, but after meeting Aoi, everything turned around and now he's all buddy-buddy with Aoi and Yukari. This goes to show that not all fire is created equal.

While ordinary humans aren't supposed to know about Aoi's existence, Hayato does as he's Aoi's childhood friend. He's not supposed to know that he existed once Aoi became the head of the household, but it turns out that Hayato's family used to be fox spirit tamers, but once the family started to die out, he was the only person left. Those foxes have every right to be on edge about what just happened, but the big brother takes it a bit too far. Turns out that behind that mask was actually Aoi, or more specifically a fragment of him. Well, things are all well and fine after Aoi diffuses the situation.

And now, an episode focused on Yukari as he was a sacrifice for the Ryujin-sama, but ended up fleeing to the Momochi House. He comes back to the spring where Ryujin resides and the water becomes tainted as Ryujin himself isn't exactly being himself. As it turns out, some talisman was placed on him and caused Ryujin to go berserk and contaminate the spring. But Momochi saw what was ailing it, and Ryujin is back to normal, giving Yukari its blessing to continue on living with Aoi and company. This goes to show how much of a different it makes to be around the right people and all.

And the supernatural stuff continues to find its way to school as Himari finds an old mirror that causes her to be sucked into her ideal world, one where her parents are alive. As great as this place is, she knows very well that this isn't real as her parents are long gone and she has long accepted that. And of course, Kasha had a hand in this going to show that he's quite the menace. Note to self to be wary of any suspicious-looking mirrors lying around.

That was so okay it was average. Actually, I didn't care for the final episode's reveal that Aoi knew about Himari's parents all along. Himari was very forgiving, but I think it made Aoi look foolish. It was almost enough to make me drop the show to a 5, but I'll keep it a 6. My advice is to watch Fruits Basket instead.

Final Thoughts
While this show had some promise and an interesting setup, the execution was just off the mark for the most part. This show does a nice job with the supernatural stuff, all while doing a great job with storytelling when it's focused on the characters specifically. But the plot was pretty rough as things just didn't flow in an optimal way. Still, it had a solid core story that made it worthwhile to watch even if all the side stories, and especially with the way Kasha is utilized in this show, made a mess of things. In all, this was just an average show at best, but definitely satisfiable for those who are into shows like Kamisama Kiss.
